Art itself is abstract. It is abstract in that it can be found in things that are not intrinsically “art.” Material (such as thread or clay) or objects (such as tables and chairs) are not typically thought of as art in themselves. But when arranged strategically they can become a work of art.
Vera Shimunia is a Russian embroidery artist who takes embroidery thread and turns it into beautiful images of sunsets and mountains. She takes a real, three dimensional landscape, and transforms it into a two dimensional, tactile circle of thread, making use of both color and stitch style. This way of crossing the boundaries of material and medium is what makes it so cool.
It’s also worth noting how tiny and therefore intricately detailed these are – look at them in comparison with her fingers!
