Filmmaker Cole Bennett has for a long time been one of the go-to names in music video production. Working with acts like Lil Pump, Juice WRLD, and Ski Mask the Slump God, Bennett has carved a niche for himself pioneering line animation and distortion techniques that have since become mainstream. His latest collaboration with Wiz Khalifa and Lil Skies, “Fr Fr”, however, marks a departure from those techniques placing a bigger focus on how the lens, rather than the mouse, can best translate energy.
Instead of using line animation and distortion to guide the eye, Bennett utilizes focus and camera movement to convey the energy of the song. While Bennett shied away from his signature effects for the most part, the music video is full of examples of incredibly accurate masking used cleverly to add both energy, and in some instances humor, to the video. Overall, this more minimalist approach in the effects department is an exciting sign to see from this filmmaker and will be an exciting trend to watch.
