Though these images are not actually new or very recent, I only learned about Google’s AI Art today in another FNAR course that I have been taking.
Our seminar/lecture-based class focuses on discussions about the influence of digital and technological developments in our modern world. Today’s topic was focused on the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Google Deep Dream has to be one of the lesser offensive and controversial applications of machine learning. The products of this algorithm are pretty trippy and foreign — yet familiar — images. The program identifies objects pixel by pixel, and uses its catalog of objects to build up images with random collages of visually similar objects.
Had I not known that these images were the result of an algorithm, I could have actually thought that these were created by a modern digital artist… which is some food for thought I suppose.
