Subtle Variations

I think Barbra Takenaga’s new body of work really speaks to the power of composition in generating different emotional responses. There are a lot of similar strokes and forms and colors arranged differently, and each creates its own unique landscape.

There is great ambiguity with what the forms in her paintings recollect, but i think there is great care in selection and placement of forms and techniques to provoke a very emotional response.

She seems like an artist to look to formally to find out how to abstract the sentiments conveyed in cities of Italo Calvino. Her use of opacity, of positive negative space, of line weight and pattern, the edge of the canvas, and of layering makers to create depth are all jumping off points.
