To This Day

One of my favorite videos of all time is the well-known To This Day Project by Shane Koyczan. Even though this isn’t some obscure piece of art with lots of hidden meaning, I still think it does an amazing job of using animation to tell a story.

The words are powerful and the cadence in Koyczan’s voice makes the 7 minutes pass by effortlessly, but the graphics really seal the deal in strengthening the message. Not only are they engaging, but they also compound the meaning of the words in parts of the story.

For example, in the discussion of a mix up between karate chops and pork chops, the graphics really help the watcher understand the confusion between them.

The graphics in this film are cleanly designed, have fantastic transitions, and have inspired many a person to watch a video that really deserves to be watched.

This video not only inspired me to be a kinder, stronger person thanks to the message, but it was also one of the first pieces of art that really made me want to learn to design so I too could portray important messages using beautiful graphics.
