Jeff Koon’s latest installation is Bouquet of Tulips, a memorial sculpture meant to honor the victims of the 2015 Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan theater attacks. The announcement came as a surprise since due to the two year long controversy over its cost and design. The piece costs the state an estimated 3.9 million. The piece was also placed at a central location far from either locations of the attacks, which many believe to be opportunistic.
I can definitely see what makes this piece so controversial. It seems to use these tragic incidents as an excuse to have this built. It also seems that too little thought was put into the design or how the victim’s lives are represented in the piece.
