Just last week, the Art Basil Miami was held showcasing works of top artists from all over the world. Among all the works, a few definitely stood out. One such work was “Running Scissors” by Sigmar Polke. On closer inspection, it becomes clear that the blades of the scissor resemble a women’s legs wearing fishnet stockings. Polke uses this as a verbal pun to portray the plight of women in the 60’s who tried hard to escape their “household duties” and cut through the expectations that were laid out for them.
Its extremely interesting to see how unusual visual depiction of even the most mundane & simple objects can often illicit such deep & profound thoughts.
