Just two days ago, the Museum of Black Civilization (MCN) was opened in the capital city of Dakar in Senegal. This $30 million dollar Chinese funded project, marks a significant new start that aims to understand and appreciate Africa’s rich past.
However, the problem lies in the fact that almost 90% of African art is showcased in museums abroad, leaving a minimal amount to showcase in MNC. “We cannot be prisoners of what we do not have,” said Bocoum, the Director of the institution. There are however, active measures being taken to retract African art from foreign shores. In addition to this, there are also active measures being taken to promote younger, more local artists.
